2013/14 Knicks Roster Power Rankings – Week 12

Four games and four wins this week making it the best week since I started this rankings.  Unlike most weeks, I might even be able to avoid making myself furious by the end of this weeks rankings:

Rank Player Comments Last weeks Rank
1 Anthony, Carmelo Melo started the week off on fire.  His last two games he hasn’t shot particularly well but it’s probably harder to shoot when there is no consistent 2nd scoring option and opponents can double you on every possession.  Melo has also been rebounding and even assisting at a decent clip.  This weeks clear #1. 3
2 Shumpert, Iman While Shumpert didn’t shoot well this week, he seems to have found his groove defensively again, putting up the best +/- on the team with a total +46 in 4 games.  He’s also averaged about 8 rebounds per game which is a nice bonus. 1
3 Martin, Kenyon It won’t show up as much in the box scores but Kenyon has been huge for the Knicks.  He’s had more than a few timely putbacks and has been an underrated passes as well. 6
4 Bargnani, Andrea it’s feast for famine with Bargnani.  He looked so good against Detroit and Miami and so bad against Philly.  At least it looks like Woodson has learned to play Bargs more when he’s hot and much less when he’s not.  Kinda like what should have been done with JR for the last 2 seasons. 7
5 Stoudemire, Amar’e While Amare had a poor outing in Detroit, he was huge in the Miami and Philly games.  He looks like he’s getting his confidence back and even got to show off some of those new post moves we’ve been hearing about.  Amare has already played more games than last season.  I’m not sure if anyone really truely expects him to stay healthy through the rest of the season and the playoffs but if he can it’ll give the bench a much needed scoring punch. 2013/14 Knicks Roster Power Rankings – Week 11

Shocking week as the Knicks take 2 out of 3 in Texas and should have won the Houston game (more on that below).  We also got to see Shumpert come out of his season long slump with 3 straight huge games:

Rank Player Comments Last weeks Rank
1 Shumpert, Iman The largest rise in the power rankings ever is much deserved.  Not sure if this weekend was a fluke or the first two months of the season was an abberation but damn 2014 has been good to Iman so far.  In the course of the weekend Iman hit 22-32 overall, 13-16 from the 3 point line, 16 boards and 7 steals.  These are numbers JR couldn’t get to even in the wettest of dreams.  Iman also hit 2 very clutch shots against Dallas which put a stop to their run and may have saved the game. 14
2 Murry, Toure’ Murry might be the Knicks best PG right now.  Good thing Woodson won’t play him more than 15 minutes a game, all that defense and lack of turnovers might be contagious, keep that man quarantined! 1
3 Anthony, Carmelo Melo had 2 great games and started off the Dallas game on fire with 15 points in the first quarter.  He then decided to play hero ball, turning the ball over or missing a terrible shot on just about every posession he was involved in in the end of the 3rd and 1st half of the 4th quarter, letting Dallas get right back into the game.  This game was the perfect example of why people love and at the same time hate Melo. 5
4 Udrih, Beno I feel like Beno is always passing to the other team, but looking at the box score I see that he had 22 assists and only 5 turnovers during the Texas trip.  He also made up for the 5 turnovers with 5 steals.  What’s most impressive is that none of the trio of Parker, Lin and Ellis scored more than 14 points, so I’d say that’s a solid week for our 3rd string turned starting PG.  And I’m not dinging him for that foul in Houston, 1 because he was hustling for the ball and 2 because the shot he was trying to rebound shouldn’t have been taken in the first place. 3
5 Chandler, Tyson Tyson still doesn’t look himself and then he missed all but the first four minutes of the Dallas game with a respiratory infection.  Is there any player in the league that gets sick as often as Tyson?  I feel like he has the flu or a cold or some infection every couple of weeks.  Anyway, Chandler was big in the Houston game and even took a few outside shots and hit one! 2013/14 Knicks Roster Power Rankings – Week 10

Three games and three ugly losses since the last rankings.  The week was highlighted by finding out Metta World Peace is an alien, Chris Smiths first NBA minutes, Dolans motivational speech followed up by Tyson Chandler saying he was told to say the meeting never happened and other stupid things that only happen with this franchise.  I’d love to just start this list with #4 but alas I can’t, so without further ado here is this weeks Knicks roster power rankings:

1 Murry, Toure’ Yeah I’m putting Murry at the top spot this week, big whoop, wanna fight about it?  No starter deserves the top spot this week after the got blown out of the water in every game this week.  Murry happens to play very good defense, makes some nice passes and those passes are to his own team, bonus!  Murry also had a +4 while playhing 27 minutes in a 15 point loss, which is the one positive from that game. 5
2 Stoudemire, Amar’e We have always said Amare is never going to be a positive on defense, but if he’s going to be super crazy efficient on offense then it’s worth having him out there.  That’s what he was this week.  The only efficient offensive threat on the entire team this week actually.  So far this list is making me sad. 12
3 Udrih, Beno Poor Beno, he looks outmatched out there sometimes, but he’s been handling the lead PG duties better than I expected.  He also called out Woodson for his inconsistent playing time and the lack of the 2 PG lineup that he was promised upon signing with this mess of a team. 4
4 Chandler, Tyson Tyson has not looked himself this week.  Maybe he came back too soon or maybe he’s playing injured.  Playing injured seems to be the thing to do on this team rather than taking a game or two off and coming back healthy and effective.  Tyson has shown flashes but not enough. 1
5 Anthony, Carmelo While I liked watching actual ball movement while Melo was out, I also like watching the ball go through the hoop, which it does not do often enough with Melo out with an ankle injury. Continue reading

2013/14 Knicks Roster Power Rankings – Week 9

Two wins and only 1 loss since last weeks power rankings.  So what if the two wins were by the smallest of margins and also to the two worst teams in the league.  It’s Christmas week and I’m trying to stay positive.  I probably won’t stay positive past #2 or 3 on this list but I’ll try my best.

1 Chandler, Tyson Oh how we missed the defense and rebounding and the yelling after dunks.  Would love to see Chandler get more involved in the offense, but after seeing what this team looked like without Tyson there is no denying him the #1 spot this week.  Especially since he didn’t get reinjured after Woodson tried to murder him in the Bucks game by keeping him in for 37 minutes, the last 10 or so of which he was clearly hobbling. 3
2 Anthony, Carmelo Carmelo Anthony hit the 50% mark twice this week!  That’s borderline efficient!  With pretty much everyone on the roster without a last name of Hardaway shooting like it’s the 8th round of a beer pong rec league I can almost understand all the iso.  Of couse he does that when he has shooters around him too so I won’t totally justify the ball hoggery. 1
3 Hardaway Jr., Tim THJ is going on week 3 as the best SG on this team.  Lets keep rolling with Shump and JR though because that strategy makes much more sense than developing a player who already leads all rookies in 3p%, which happens to be a glaring weakness on this team. 2
4 Udrih, Beno I’m already having a ton of trouble with this list.  I guess Beno gets it for his really great game against the Bucks (offensively anyway, he did let Brandon Knight score approx. 357 points), and some decent play against the magic.  He did completely stink against Memphis, but so did pretty much everyone. 11
5 Murry, Toure’ Why is Toure’ Murry so high?  He’s the only player from this point forward that didn’t completely suck in at least 1 game this week and/or get/is injured.  Plus that sick behind the back pass to Hardaway had to bump him up a few spots. Continue reading

2013/14 Knicks Roster Power Rankings – Week 8

The Knicks are 2-3 since my last power rankings and two or three players have been injured since then as well.  Who’s hot and who’s not?  Lets find out!

Rank Player Comments Last weeks Rank
1 Anthony, Carmelo His rebounding has dipped and he apparantly didn’t know that he is allowed to call a timeout, but he’s been scoring efficiently and hasn’t been as big a mess on defense as a lot of guys on this roster.  Who else even remotely deserves the top spot at this point? 1
2 Hardaway Jr., Tim THJ has been the best SG on this team for 2 weeks running yet still sees inconsistent minutes because…Woodson doesn’t like rooks?  At this point there is no reason he shouldn’t be playing ahead of Shump and JR. 4
3 Chandler, Tyson Chandler might make his return tomorrow!  Perfect timing since he now has no one to pass to him. 3
4 Prigioni, Pablo Pablo was doing a much better job at the point than Felton.  The Knicks even had two entire games where the opposing point guard didn’t torch the Knicks (one of which was against Boston and Jordan Crawford is on my fantasy team.  That HAD to be the game where the opposing PG gets shut down?).  Now Pablo has a broken toe so the Knicks will have Udrih, JR, Shump and maybe Chris Smith at PG *sobs* 2
5 Stoudemire, Amar’e Four straight great offensive games before laying a turd against the Wizards sans Nene.  It’s nice having a legitimate 2nd scoring option.  Hopefully this level of play will continue until the next injury. Continue reading

2013/14 Knicks Roster Power Rankings – Week 7

How do you even judge a team that wins two in a row by a total of 68 points and then loses by 41 two days later?  Can the Knicks now only beat bad teams that are missing at least two starters?  I’ll try again to make sense of this crazy roster.

Rank Player Comments Last weeks Rank
1 Anthony, Carmelo The Melo everyone wants showed up to the Nets and Magic games.  Anthony took only good shots and as a result had his first back to back over .500 shooting nights of the season, he rebounded and he got a good amount of assists.  The bad Melo showed up in Boston, but I can only penalize him to much considering the bad version of everyone showed up against Boston. 2
2 Prigioni, Pablo Pablo was one of two players to show up against Boston.  The team shot 65% for the 17 minutes he played and 22% for the 31 minutes he didn’t.  Is Woodson the only one who doesn’t understand that Priggy makes this team better?  Lets make sure he definitely plays less than 20 minutes a game because Felton is super awesome. 4
3 Chandler, Tyson Chandler is in week 5 of rehab and is talking about maybe coming back before new Years which would make his 4-6 week recovery period about 8 weeks long.  No one wants him to come back before he’s totally healthy but I think we learned that he’s the #1 most important player on this roster. 7
4 Hardaway Jr., Tim Rook has been looking real good.  He better be careful though, if he keeps this up he’ll end up on the trading block.  Also, is anyone else worried that he’s using JR’s 3-point celebration on the bench?  I like the enthusiasm but I hope he’s not using JR as a role model. 5
5 Martin, Kenyon Raise your hand if you’re surprised that lifting his minutes restriction, and playing him heavy minutes at center would result in sore joints.  At least he got to miss the Boston Massacre. Continue reading

2013/14 Knicks Roster Power Rankings – Week 6

This would be a lot easier if someone could string together more than 1 game of decent play.  Three games, three losses and lots of blame to go around.  Read along as I try to make sense of this mess of a roster.

Rank Player Comments Last weeks Rank
1 Bargnani, Andrea Yes Bargnani is really bad in transition D.  However he has been playing good man to man D, even getting 10 blocks over a 2 game stretch, been scoring pretty efficiently and rebounding at a decent rate.  That’s all it takes to get a #1 spot on this roster apparently. 3
2 Anthony, Carmelo Still rebounding really well.  Still scoring very inefficiently, but at least he made up for it with 4 assists over 3 games and topped it off with running down the clock while down by 2 before missing a turnaround at the buzzer, shocking no one. 1
3 Martin, Kenyon Assists! Rebounds! Defense!  Why doesn’t this rub off on anyone else? 2
4 Prigioni, Pablo Lets not ever try the two point guard lineup.  It worked too well last season and everyting is going great so far this season.  It’s not that Pablo played great this week, but he played better than all the other point guards on this team. Continue reading
