Knicks vs Bulls – 1-11-13 – Game Recap

Knicks lose one hell of an ugly game

This story is getting old.  No Melo, Felton, Shumpert, and Wallace and Camby left early with back spasms.  Oh and Indy happens to let up the fewest points in the league.  It was obvious points were going to be hard to come by but 34 points at the half?

  • There was a flurry of bad calls at the end of the 2nd quarter.  Who would have thought a game reffed by Heywoode Workman (A Pacer on the ’94 team that lost to the Knicks in 7 games in the conference finals) would result in some questionable calls.
  • Let me be clear, that was NOT the reason the Knicks lost.   2 players scoring in double digits, one of them being JR who needed 29 shots to score 25 points was.  Shooting 35% from the field and 20% from 3 is not going to win many games.
  • Roy Hibbert went down with back spasms and Ian Mahinmi came in.  This is when things went really bad for the Knicks as Ian then proceded to tear the Knicks a new one the entire 4th quarter.  Ian Mahinmi – #Knickeffect
  • Marcus Camby was said to have a sore foot.  This is also the diagnosis they gave for Rasheed Wallace.  He was last seen on the court 28 days ago and counting.  Lets hope it’s not as serious as Wallaces “sore foot”.
  • There really isn’t much to take away from this game.  The Knicks were really short handed and no one was able to step up and score some points.  The Pacers are a good home team too.  Can’t get too mad, although the losses are starting to pile up now, 7 losses in the last 12 games.
  • On the bright side Shumpert should be back in a little over a week which is really good since Brewer apparently wasn’t even able to give 10 minutes on a night when half the roster was out.

Different Roster, Same Scenario Against the Celtics

Why why why do the Celtics always do this to the Knicks.  It’s almost like the big brother picking on his kid brother.

  • The Celtics played a very physical game which seems to give the Knicks fits (see Memphis and Chicago games).
  • Camby seems to have taken over Thomas’ role of starting the first 4 minutes of each half and never being seen again.
  • Avery Bradley makes it so difficult for anyone to get anything going on offense.  Prigioni was having trouble just making it past half court.
  • For some reason the 2nd quarter consisted of JR playing point guard (and not passing) and Priggy taking long 3’s.  This strategy did not work out very well.
  • Sullinger is only a rookie but he’s really progressed very quickly in his ability to flop.  He may be the first person this season to get a warning and a fine in the same game.  Also, when Sullinger subbed in Clyde waited until his 2nd possession to make fun of his weight instead of immediately bringing up his chunkiness.
  • I loved when Garnett and Melo were going back and forth and Melo hit a 3 and yelled “I’m coming back.”
  • I didn’t love when Melo then missed his next 796 shots.
  • I really didn’t love when Garnett then turned into Obi Wan Kenobi and mind controlled Melo, turning him into an f-bomb dropping rage monster that jacked up silly shots the rest of the game.
  • Paul Pierce shoots somewhere between 99.7 and 100% in final minute daggers against the Knicks.
  • These teams really do hate each other.  It was reported that Melo went into the Celtics locker room after the game.

Knicks scare the crap out of Knick Nation before beating Magic

Well that was close.  After starting the game down 14-2 to the lowly Magic the Knicks come back to beat Orlando.

  • More Camby lobs please.
  • Melo was in video game mode.  Especially in the 4th where he had a stream of fire coming out the back of the ball during his shots.
  • I didn’t know Charlie Day from It’s Always Sunny was on the Magic.
  • Amare needs to call Hakeen and ask how to finish these moves without getting his shot blocked.  It’s amazing how many of his shots get rejected.  His defense didn’t look great either (surprise surprise).  At least he hit all his free throws.
  • I’m still waiting to hear that Brewer has been playing injured.
  • Nelson got shut down in the 4th quarter, he was on pace for a Knick Effect tonight.  Nicholson was too before he faded.
  • Jason Kidd.  39 years old.  15-8-7.  Amazing.
  • It would be really nice if the Knicks could start games like they finish them.  It would make life a lot less stressful for everyone involved.
  • That’s about all I have to say about tonights game.  Bring on Boston.  Hopefully the Knicks can push them further below .500 on Monday.

Knicks sweep the Spurs for the first time in 10 years

OK so were we in the twilight zone tonight or on Tuesday night?  THIS is the Knicks team everyone wants to see.  Intense D, ball movement on offense and everyone getting involved.  You know, the opposite of last game.

If I had to guess I’d say that Tuesday was the anomaly and tonight is going to be the norm, which by the way if you want to bet on NY Knicks you can do NBA betting (click here) at Top Bet.  The Knicks still have 4 players out, but you can start to get a feel of how this team is going to look a month from now.  Camby looked better than he has all season with 16 solid minutes, 6 boards and a number of blocked shots.  If he’s going to be able to do that for 15-18 minutes on a nightly basic I’m fine with that and also fine with Kurt Thomas buried on the bench only to be used as insurance.

Amare was aggressive and was showing off the post moves he learned this summer.  He got blocked about 17 times, but put a few in and drew a few fouls.  The crazy part is he didn’t make me constantly scream at the TV about his defense.  If he can play that level of defense every night (acceptable but not great) then this is going to be a dangerous team come playoff time.

Brewer his a few shots but he’s going to have to have a string of solid games for me not to cringe every time he shoots the ball.  He’s the leading candidate to get buried on the bench if Shumpert resembles an NBA player when he comes back from injury. Continue reading

Knicks surprise no one by losing in Amare’s season debut

Amare played for the first time this season and Ed Malloy (who was surprisingly less biased than usual tonight) was reffing so you knew there was no way the Knicks were winning tonight.

Another reason they lost is this shot chart that I put together:

knicks shot chart

  • It was really fun having Amare back tonight; looks like he watched zero game tape during his time off as he still looks completely lost on D.
  • Amare was also icing both knees after pre-game warmups.  A sign of things to come.
  • Don’t drink every time Amare gets burned on D because alcohol poisoning is bad for you.
  • If an opposing player is within 10 feet of Novak he can’t hit a shot.  Woodson should see how tightly teams are playing him and give his minutes to someone else if he can’t get a good look because he’s also been emulating Amare on D.
  • I liked the few minutes Chandler and Camby played together.
  • Melo is going to have chronic back problems from having to carry this team every night.
  • Felton can’t come back soon enough.
  • The Knicks look like they are back to being the team that is completely unpredictable from night to night.  Are they going to play tough and hit shots or get completely blown out, who knows anymore?
  • Kurt Thomas, 3 fouls in the first 4 minutes and doesn’t play the rest of the game.  How come other players aren’t on as short of a leash as Kurt?
  • HIT YOUR GOD DAMN FREE THROWS
  • Intense D is what got the Knicks off to such a good start.  What happened?  Can’t blame tonight completely on Amare, plus they defense has looked like trash for a few games now.

A Roller-coaster of Emotions

This game made me so angry, sad, happy, grumpy, ecstatic, nervous, depressed, elated, worried and furious.

  •  Since the Knicks were playing the Kings it seems like they decided to try and win with only Chandler and Copeland trying in the 1st half.
  • Derrick Rose is apparently healthy.  He wore an Isiah Thomas jersey in the first quarter of this game and an Aaron Brooks jersey in the 2nd quarter.
  • The first quarter of this game was the most disgusting thing I watched all day. And I watched Human Centipede 2 today.
  • I threw up in my mouth during the Fredette coast to coast layup.
  • Two minutes later I threw up again during Copelands coast to coast layup that got blocked.  All 2 1/2 minutes it took him to get there.  Why a layup?
  • James Johnson.  Season high.  Knick Effect.
  • Who has more confidence when they shoot, JR Smith or Chris Copeland?
  • Since Dec 11th Ronnie Brewer has missed 14 straight 3-pointers, has 5 zero-point games and another 3 2-point games.  Shumpert needs to come back ASAP.
  • James White got the start, picked up 2 fouls in the first minute and was benched until the middle of the 2nd quarter.  Thanks for the contribution!
  • The Knicks were down by 27 in the middle of the 2nd quarter to the Kings.  27!
  • In the 3rd quarter the Kings remembered they were thing Kings and let the Knicks pull to within 6.
  • Tyson hit your free throws.  Tyson hit your free throws.  Tyson hit your free throws.  Tyson hit your free throws.  Tyson hit your free throws.  Tyson hit your free throws.  Tyson hit your free throws.  Tyson hit your free throws.  Tyson hit your free throws. Tyson hit your free throws.  Tyson hit your free throws.  Tyson hit your free throws.  Tyson hit your free throws.  Tyson hit your free throws.  Tyson hit your free throws.  Tyson hit your free throws.  Tyson hit your free throws.  Tyson hit your free throws.  Tyson hit your free throws.  Tyson hit your free throws.  Tyson hit your free throws.
  • Phantom foul on Kidd, Thomas hits both because unlike the Knicks the Kings can hit their free throws.  (at one point in the 1st quarter the Knicks (Chandler) were 0-4 and the Kings were 10-10) That was the first bad call I’ve seen all night, not bad.  And the Knicks are still up so all is good.
  • The Knicks pull off the impossible, come back from the largest deficit in Knicks history and are up by 2 at the buzzer.
  • Oh wait, not quite at the buzzer, Kings hit a buzzer beater to ruin Knicks fans day 1/2 hour into it.  That one hurt.

The Knicks Turn Back the Clock Against the Bulls

And by turn back the clock I mean turn back the clock to last season when the Knicks were a sub-.500 team.

  • My theory is the Knicks thought the world would end before the end of the game so it didn’t matter how the played tonight.
  • Through three quarters Carmelo Anthony had 26 points on 9-23 shooting and the other four starters combined had 10 points on 3-17 shooting.
  • I don’t know what happened to Brewer but he’s gotten slightly worse every game to the point where tonight in 9 minutes he was 0-4 with a +/- of minus 15.
  • The refs decided to let the teams play very physical in the beginning of the game and then call everything in the 2nd quarter.  This led to a very pissed off Melo who got his 7th technical of the season in the 2nd quarter and his 8th in the 4th and is now on pace to get suspended about 8 times before the season is over.  Woodson also got ejected.  And Chandler.  Not sure how many atrociously officiated games have to be made before the league does something about it, but apparently it has to be somewhere in the high millions.
  • Carlos Boozer does not shut up for a second when he’s on the court, and it’s mostly bitching about not getting foul calls or yelling “And One” after every Bulls shot.
  • This team has a lot of trouble with bigger teams.  I’m assuming this problem will be solved when any combination of Amare, Wallace and Camby come back.
  • I think we’re going to have to start calling him JR Felton as he’s taken the lead in being Just Ridiculously good or just ridiculously bad from game to game.
  • Tyson with zero shot attempts through three quarters.  Zero.  Finished with a whopping one attempt.  At least he made it.
  • Apparently being up by 20 in the 4th quarter still doesn’t get Thibodeau to unload the bench.  Not managing starters minutes isn’t the best of strategies, sincerely the D’Antoni era Knicks.
  • JR Smith, one of two Knicks to be playing anywhere near acceptable basketball (26 points and 10 rebounds) fouls out with 7 minutes left in the game.

Note:  I turned the game off with 6 minutes to go and the Knicks down by 14 and Smith, Woodson and Melo all out.  They came real close to winning which shows you can never count this team out.

Due to Scheduling Miscommunication Knicks Accidentally Thought They Had the Night Off

  • I think our listener Niro put it best when he said “There were two games this season that just disgusted me. The Houston game and the Houston game.”
  • I understand the Knicks were without Melo, Sheed, Shumpert, Amare and Camby, but they weren’t scheduled to be without Defense, good shooting, controlling the pace and taking care of the ball too.
  • There is a lot of talk about Lin and Harden not being able to play together, but they combined for 394,402,134 points on 97% shooting tonight (approximately) so maybe we shouldn’t jump to conclusions.
  • At least Chandler Parsons didn’t light the Knicks up again.
  • Copeland got 9 quick points to start the 3rd quarter and for a second I thought the Knicks were going to make a comeback, but then the Knicks decided it would be a good idea to let Harden shoot open 3’s the rest of the night.
  • I started this recap 5 minutes ago when the Knicks were down by 20 and they are now down by 27.
  • JR, I love when you go to bed early and have a great shooting game the next day, but can you try and make that happen in a game where you’re good shooting would actually make a difference?
  • I’m really glad the Knicks don’t have to play Houston again for at least 11 more months.
  • 10-1 at home is still really darn good.
  • Another positive is we can start to prepare for Copesanity.  He had a career high 29 points on 11-19 shooting.

Knicks Bench Beat the Cleveland D-Leagers

  • Chris Copeland started instead of Carmelo Anthony.  This is one of the few teams where the previous sentence still ends with a win.
  • Three players on the Cavs were wearing face masks.  What the hell is going on in Cleveland?
  • Even when Kidd’s shot isn’t falling (which was pretty much only today) he’s doing so many other things on the court it’s really amazing to watch.
  • Kyrie Irving had 41-5-5.  Imagine what he’d do with a team of actual NBA players.
  • What I learned from this game is that Luke Walton is still alive.
  • The Knicks only had 10 players suited up for this game.  They are 18-5 with 3-5 players injured every game.  Will this team be downright deadly when everyone is back?  Will everyone ever be back?
  • After the run the Knicks went on in the 2nd quarter I never felt worried about this game, even when the Cavs made it a 1 point game in the final minute.  That’s the kind of season the Knicks are having so far.  I have complete confidence in their ability to not have a meltdown against a bad team.
  • All that being said I REALLY REALLY hope Melo comes back for Mondays game.
