2016/17 Knicks Roster Power Rankings – Week 13

Yeah I know I know, I missed the first 12 weeks of the season. Better late than never. These rankings are based on the last week of games.
Rank Player Comments Last weeks Rank
1 Anthony, Carmelo Slow start to the season, but Melo has been very solid the last 2 weeks. Of course Knicks being Knicks, Melo met with Phil today to discuss Melo’s future with the team. Stay tuned.
2 Rose, Derrick Derrick Rose has proved this month that he can still drive. He can drive to the basket. He can drive around in Chicago while the Knicks have a game. Unparalleled when it comes to driving.
3 Baker, Ron I’m not going to be unrealistic, Baker would probably barely play on any other team, but he’s been really solid for the Knicks. He’s turned 30 point blowouts into 10 point beatings a number of times already.
4 Kuzminskas, Mindaugas Another pleasant surprise, Kuz has the ability to score from inside and out. Defense isn’t great, but it’s not like pretty much anyone on this team is great at that.
5 Holiday, Justin If the Knicks decide to blow this team up I hope Holiday is one of the few pieces they pick out of the rubble.
6 Noah, Joakim This week Noah has been rebounding like a guy who gets paid 18M a year. Now if he can re-learn to defend, shoot free throws, and stay on the court more than 20 minutes a game we might have something here.
7 Lee, Courtney The Knicks can’t defend anyone. So when it was time for a starting lineup change the only starter who is good at defense got benched because Knicks.
8 O’Quinn, Kyle The Knicks have been almost not losing lately and O’Quinn is often the reason for the Knicks almost not losing.
9 Hernangomez, Willy Willy looked great the first 6 weeks of the season and now he can’t get any minutes. Considering Porzingis has been out this isn’t a good sign.
10 Jennings, Brandon Hey it’s that guy who looks great once every 2 weeks and completely disappears the rest of the time!
11 Porzingis, Kristaps Every night I pray to the basketball gods that KP’s achilles heals 100%.
12 Thomas, Lance When I was thinking of all the possible injuries the Knicks will have this season, broken face wasn’t among them.
13 Plumlee, Marshall Knicks are obeying league rules that state every team has to have a Plumlee or a Zeller.
14 Vujacic, Sasha Sasha is so happy Ndour is on the team because now there is someone ranked below him.
15 Ndour, Maurice Trying to end on a positive note. Ndour has been looking good in the d-league!

New York Knicks vs Oklahoma City Thunder – 11/28/16 – Game Recap

New York Knicks vs Oklahoma City Thunder
Game 17: November 28, 2016
Thunder 112, Knicks 103

Written by Eric Weinstein – @ericcweinsteinn

Yeah, that Westbrook guy is pretty good.

Mr. Triple Double came into the Garden tonight and lived up to that name, and then some.

Russell Westbrook had a triple double 3 minutes into the third quarter and finished with 27 points, 18 rebounds, and 14 assists, which are numbers even the best NBA 2K players would have trouble getting (I would know, I’m a beast at 2K). A disappointing loss to say the least, as the Knicks saw their home winning streak come to an end at 6. Derrick Rose had his highest scoring game of the season with 30 points to lead the Knicks. Kristaps Porzingis had 21 points, and Carmelo Anthony had one of his worst games this season with 18 points on 4-19 shooting.

Takeaways from this game:

Westbrook.

If this guy doesn’t win the MVP it’s a joke. If you take away Russell Westbrook from the Oklahoma City Thunder, Continue reading

New York Knicks vs Charlotte Hornets – 11/25/16 – Game Recap

New York Knicks vs Charlotte Hornets
Game 15: November 25, 2016
Knicks 113, Hornets 111 OT

Written by Eric Weinstein – @ericcweinsteinn

A block party at MSG.

The Knicks won an overtime thriller at the Garden on Friday night in the first leg of a home and home with the Charlotte Hornets, 113-111. Carmelo Anthony iced the game with a turnaround jumper with 3.1 seconds to go, and had an impressive stat line to say the least. 35 points, a season high 14 rebounds, and 5 assists for the Knicks star forward. Kristaps Porzingis, who was in foul trouble for most of the game, ended up with 16 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 impressive blocks. Derrick Rose 16 points and 5 assists, and blocked Kemba Walker in the final seconds of overtime for the win.  Walker had 17 points and 3 assists, and Nicolas Batum led the team with 18 points.

Takeaways from this game:

Interior Defense:

Even though there are still a lot easy baskets in the lane, the interior defense in the second half was much improved. The highlight plays were obvious, with KP and Melo coming up with impressive blocked shots, as well as Rose with the game clincher. Blocked shots could be a strength for this team, with good shot blockers like KP, Joakim Noah, and Kyle O’Quinn all good-to-great interior defenders. The blocks lead to easy opportunities in transition and mismatches on the other end.

Clutch Gene:

What I feel is the biggest takeaway from this game is that the Knicks can go a number of different ways at the end of close games. The Knicks have the big three of Anthony, Porzingis, and Rose, who can all step up and take the final shot of a game. Rose and Anthony took turns in the fourth quarter and overtime, and KP hit a huge three pointer with about 40 seconds to go in OT. Iso-Melo may have ended this one, but it’s not the only option like it has been in the past. A refreshing change.

Joakim Noah:

It’s beginning to be a problem that the Knicks spent all this money on a center who doesn’t play in the fourth quarter or overtime. 72 million dollars for 18 minutes? And to not even do much in those 18 minutes? 6 points and 8 rebounds are good numbers if you’re a role player, not if you’re expected to produce at a near max contract level like Noah is. This is a problem that is only going to get worse. Guys like KO and Willy Hernangomez are out-producing Noah on both ends, and they make far less money. The Knicks just need more from him, plain and simple.

The Knicks have to quickly regroup after this emotional come from behind win at MSG, because they play the same team in Charlotte tomorrow night. They look to get their fourth win in a row, and start to accumulate some wins on the road. Home court has been protected, and it’s time to conquer some other arenas. 8-7.

New York Knicks vs Brooklyn Nets – 11/9/16 – Game Recap

New York Knicks vs Brooklyn Nets
Game 7: November 9, 2016
Knicks 110, Nets 96

Written by Eric Weinstein – @ericcweinsteinn

The EuroKnicks came to play!

After all the talk of too much triangle and Kurt Rambis taking over as the defensive coach, the Knicks came and played a solid basketball game, as they defeated the Nets at the MSG, 110-96.

Takeaways from this game:

Defense:

Even though it was against the rebuilding with no draft picks Nets, this was the best game the Knicks played on the defensive side of the ball. After giving up 55 points in the first half, they tightened up the defense and gave up only 41 points in the second half. A huge improvement from the past few games. This is also the first time the Knicks hadn’t given up 100 points in the game. Baby steps, as the defense still needs to improve if they expect to compete with the better teams in the NBA.

The Bench:

Could the Knicks perhaps have (gasp), a playable bench? Well, Willy Hernangomez, Mindaugus Kuzminskas, and Brandon Jennings were excellent off the bench in the second half. Jennings had his best game as a Knick, with a season high 11 assists. The biggest positive of the game was Hernangomez though, as he definitely locked up the backup center spot for at least another game (sorry KO). 14 points on 6-7 shooting with 6 rebounds in 15 minutes? Sounds great to me. Can’t expect this every night, but the defense and ball movement was awesome to watch. The lineup with Jennings, Vujacic, Kuz, KP, and Hernangomez was a lot of fun as well.

KP on the P&R:

Finally, we get to Porzingis.

I still don’t know why it took the Knicks this long to realize that Porzingis in the pick and roll is their best offense. After too much triangle, KP started playing pick and roll with Jennings and immediately hit consecutive threes, and had an and one dunk after a sweet pass from Jennings.

Why the Knicks don’t run that every time down the court is beyond me. He finished with 21 points on 7-15 shooting, 8 boards, and 2 blocks.

Oh yeah, and Carmelo Anthony, Derrick Rose, and Courtney Lee had a combined 49 points.

Solid outing from those three, even though Melo only really had it going in the third quarter.

This was a solid game to build on, with a tough matchup in Boston this Friday, as they look to get back to .500 with a win there. 3-4.

Episode 343: Rounding Out the Roster

Marc and Jay talk about the recent signings of Mindaugas Kuzminskas and Guillermo Hernangomez.  The possible return of Sasha Vujacic, the Jared Sullinger rumor, and possible players to take the last couple of roster spots. We spend some time talking about a few other signings around the league including Wade leaving Miami.
