If the Knicks play like they don’t care, why should we care?
That headline may be a little harsh considering the Knicks were without Kristaps Porzingis and Derrick Rose tonight, but that doesn’t mean the rest of the team should be excused for a complete lack of effort on the defensive end. Brandon Jennings and Willy Hernangomez were inserted into the starting lineup to replace the two missing Knicks, and both of those guys played well on the offensive side of the ball. Jennings finished with 21 points and Hernangomez had 15 points and 14 rebounds. Carmelo Anthony continued his hot streak of scoring and led the Knicks with 26 points on 10-17 shooting,\ and also pulled down five rebounds. Offense isn’t the problem on this team, but I think we all know that by now.
I couldn’t count how many times Jennings let John Wall get into the paint in this game. In his defense, Wall is one of the best point guards in the NBA, but at least try and make it a little bit difficult for him to get to the basket. The big man duo of Hernangomez and Kyle O’Quinn can only bail out their teammates so much when they just continue to let the opposing guards get right into the lane, which leads to a lay-up or a wide open three.
Kelly Oubre, Markeiff Morris, and Otto Porter are all guys on the former Washington Bullets who can consistently make three pointers, and they all need to have a defender on them. If their man has to sag off of them because Rose and Jennings can’t keep their man out of the paint, then guys like the one’s I just listed are going to have a field day behind the arc.
15 minutes. 0 points. 4 rebounds. 1 assist. Phil Jackson gave this man 72 million dollars for numbers like this. Would you give that money to someone who puts up these numbers? If you answered yes, I don’t think basketball is for you. Joakim Noah continues to be just awful for the Knicks, and I don’t see it getting any better. Hernangomez needs to stay in the starting lineup when Kristaps Porzingis returns, because it is enough wth this dude. Horrible.
I stopped watching early in the fourth quarter. I just can’t stomach watching this team continue to be disinterested on the defensive end. If this team thinks they can get out of this slump, the defense has to improve. It’s that simple. Guys like Hernangomez, O’Quinn, Justin Holiday (who had a tough game), and Courtney Lee all play so hard when they come into the game, and I don’t understand why it isn’t contagious. To be fair to the rest of the Knicks, those guys aren’t perfect, but the effort is there every night. If someone one year ago today told me I would be praising the effort of Kyle O’Quinn, I would have laughed at them, but he has been one of the few bright spots of the Knicks this season. Maybe the Knicks dangle him for draft picks at the trade deadline? Who knows, but for now, I want to see him or WHG in the starting lineup every game.
The Knicks come right back and play a struggling Brooklyn Nets team at the Barclays Center Wednesday night, and that one has to end with a Knicks victory. You absolutely cannot lose to the Nets, who were a robust 1-15 in the month of January. I’m borderline done with the Knicks this season, and if they lose to Brooklyn, I’ll be fully done. 21-29.

#TrapGame
The Knicks traveled to Washington to take on the Wizards on the second game of a back to back, and showed a lot of fatigue. They came out sluggish in the first half, got creamed in the third quarter, made it interesting in the fourth quarter, but ultimately fell to the Wizards, 119-112. John Wall once again tantalized the Knicks, to use a Clyde-ism, with 23 points and 11 assists to lead the Wizards. Derrick Rose had his best scoring game as a Knick with 27 points, and Brandon Jennings had an excellent game off the bench with 17 points and 10 assists.
Kristaps Porzingis and Carmelo Anthony both struggled from the field after great games last night, as they shot a combined 14-33 for 35 points.
Takeaways from this game:
Point guard play:
The lone bright spot from this game was the great minutes from Derrick Rose and Brandon Jennings. Both of these guys were scoring at will in the second half, with Rose going off in the third, and Jennings in the fourth. Jennings continues to move the ball effortlessly as he eclipsed the 10 assist mark once again. Rose was getting into the paint with ease and hit a few three pointers, a shot he has struggled with so far this season. Jennings also caught fire from three in the fourth quarter when he hit three in a row from downtown to make the game at least somewhat interesting, but it was too little, too late for the Knicks. What else is new?
Lack of three point defense:
Not much to say here other than the fact that it was horrible. The Knicks let the Wizards, who are one of the worst three point shooting teams in the NBA, shoot 15-25 from three point land, good for 60% from the field. There is no way a team can expect to win when they let their opponent shoot that well from three. The Knicks weren’t fighting to get over screens, which led to countless open threes for Washington. Good to see Kurt Rambis has made some adjustments on defense! (Not).
Otto Porter Knick effect alert:
21 points, 8 rebounds. One of his best games of the season.
All the good feelings from the win against the Pistons pretty much went away by the third quarter of this game. The Knicks didn’t show any life in the first 40 minutes and it showed on the scoreboard. They always seem to make it interesting, but this was one they should’ve had easily. The Wizards are a struggling team coming off a bad loss in Philadelphia last night, so it wasn’t like they were coming in well rested either. These are the games the Knicks will look at in April if they are fighting for a playoff spot and see that it was one they had to have. A playoff team HAS to take advantage of games like this, especially with the tough games the Knicks have coming up next week. With Atlanta, Portland, and Charlotte all coming to the Garden the next three games, the Knicks are going to need to bounce back quickly to avoid falling into a deeper hole to start the season. 5-7.

John Wall dominated the first half, scoring in double figures in the first quarter alone. John Wall is one of the quickest point guards in the league, and he displayed it Monday night. Wall attacked in the open court, scoring either for himself or getting his teammates involved for 16 first half fast break points. John Wall had 19 points and 5 assist by halftime, and got plenty of help from Martell Webster, as he dropped four threes to compliment Wall penetrating attack into the paint. Martell Webster would fall a couple points of reaching his career high in points, finishing the game with 30 points.
The Knicks could not stop the Wizards, allowing 55.6% field goal, and getting scorched from beyond the arc, for seven three point shots in the first half. The Wizards kept the Knicks in the game, by turning the ball over frequently, with ten turnovers alone just in the second quarter. The extra possessions were much needed for New York, as the Knicks shoot a dismal 31.9% from the field, and was not able to collect much offensive rebounds off so many misses, only collecting five from 32 misses. The Knicks show a complete lack of interest in the #1 seed
The Knicks lost to Harry Potters tonight and it was not pretty. Here are my thoughts:
- Maybe the Knicks are scared that the Celtics will be the 8th seed
- Would you be surprised to learn that the Knicks bet Woodson that they could stay up for 24 straight hours and still beat the Wizards?
- Some people said that the Wizards won because they are younger and faster than the Knicks. I have seen old-timers games where both teams looked faster than the Knicks tonight. It was not like the Wizards were running the Knicks ragged tonight, they just hit the open shots that the Knicks gave them.
- Felton slowly dribbles up, asks Melo for a pick, Melo refuses and demands the ball, Felton again asks for a pick, Melo again refuses and Felton gives him the ball 20 feet from the basket, Melo dribbles a bit and misses an off balance 18 ft shot. This really happened. Continue reading
Knicks vs. team formerly known as the Bullets – 2-6-13
I get it John Wall is fast and they have some other young fast guards. They also have some good big men. What I also get is that that are the Wizards and they are destined for the lottery. The Knicks will win tonight with the only uncertainty being whether Chandler pulls down 20 boards. Who will get tonights #Knickeffect? Comment below as the game goes on.
Knicks Win Because That is What They Are Supposed to Do!!!
The Knicks won by 21 points tonight against the Bullets (I hate calling them the Wizards). The game was never really close and the Knicks did what they are supposed to do, show no mercy on lesser opponents. It is hard to remember a time when the Knicks consistently blew out their opponents. There is more I could say about the Knicks performance but instead I am just going to spend the rest of this recap insulting the Bullets/Wizards.
- David Stern announced big sanctions coming against Washington for playing the actual guys on the roster.
- Washington thought they had a chance tonight because they misread the inactive and active list and thought they would be playing against Jason Kidd by himself…and, even then, they only thought they had a chance.
- Washington is nicknamed the Wizards because it would take an actual Wizard to turn this franchise around.
- The Wizards are so bad that they have been asked to replace the Generals so the Globetrotters can have an easier opponent.
- How can the Wizards cut Blatche and actually get worse? Continue reading
