Game two of the five game road trip of death took the Knicks to Hollywood for a Sunday night matchup with the Lakers at Staples Center. The Knicks had a number of opportunities to blow this game wide open, but couldn’t hold the Lakers down long enough to pull away. New York hung on and defeated the Lakers 118-112. Derrick Rose was back in the starting lineup after missing the past two games with a back injury and he came out of the gates on fire, hitting his first 8 shots from the field and finishing the game with 25 points. Kristaps Porzingis snapped out of his shooting funk and led the Knicks with 26 points on 8-15 shooting, along with 12 rebounds and 7 blocks. Brandon Jennings helped seal the game with an incredible fourth quarter, and he chipped in with 19 points and 4 assists. Lou Williams led the Lakers with 24 points off the bench, and Luol Deng, another underperforming 72 million dollar man, had 22 points.

2015/16 Knicks Roster Power Rankings – Week 8

An up a down week.  There was the Utah game where the Knicks got spanked, the Kings game that the Knicks should have won, and the Portland game where they finally did win.  A lot of shake ups in the rankings this week as Porzingis terrible week gets him dethroned, and O’Quinn gets out of the doghouse and shoots up the standings.

3 O’Quinn, Kyle I don’t know what to make of this, KOQ had a great week, grabbed a ton of boards, and even had a 7-8 night against Portland.  Why does Fisher bench him for weeks at a time? 13
4 Thomas, Lance Never thought I’d ever put Thomas this high.  Does this count as my apology? 7
5 Vujacic, Sasha This is like the bizarro standings.  I still think we’d be better off if Sasha were in a suit, but I can’t deny how good he was this week.  Sasha almost led a comeback in Utah after a no show by the starters. Continue reading →

Knicks at Raptors 11-10-15 – Game Recap

A night where Knicks head coach Derek Fisher played 13 guys, it somehow all came together.

A blown call with Carmelo Anthony stepping out of bounds might have been the break the Knicks needed to pull out a victory. The Toronto Raptors made things very interesting hitting a 3 pointer to pull within 1 point with 1.5 seconds left. But the Knicks prevailed as they defeated the Raptors 111-109. The New York Knicks improved their record to 4-4 led by Carmelo Anthony who had a solid night with 25 points on 10-23 shooting. DeMar DeRozan led the Toronto Raptors with 29 points.

Lance Thomas, a key contributor in the 4th quarter said after the game “We imposed our will, everybody fought, its us against everybody”.

Tip Ins

Robin Lopez had one of his best games of the season contributing offensively and defensively. He racked in 12 points, 8 rebounds and 4 key blocks. Continue reading →

Knicks @ Thunder 11/28/14 – Game Recap

New York was completely overwhelmed by the return of Russell Westbrook to Oklahoma City.

Westbrook first feed his teammates, assisting on the first three made field goals for the Thunders, and then eventually got himself involved with a vicious baseline dunk to give Oklahoma City a 8-5 lead. The dunk was only the start to what ignited a 15-0 run, where the run was bookended by a Westbrook three-pointer that gave the Thunder a 21-5 lead with under five minutes remaining in the opening quarter. Westbrook received a standing ovation when he was substituted out of the game, finishing the first quarter with 14 points, which was more than New York scored as a whole… New York shot a dismal 18.2% from the field, converting on only four field goals.

Even with Westbrook on the bench to start the second quarter, New York could not capitalize…instead Jeremy Lamb went to work on the Knicks. Lamb was personally responsible for a 10-0 to start the second quarter. Lamb scored eight of his 13 points in the run while also handing out an assist to Kendrick Perkins. The deficit for New York grew up to 40-13, where finally with Cole Aldrich’s hustle plays helped give a lifeless Knicks team an 8-0 run.

2014/15 Knicks Roster Power Rankings – Week 5

4 games and 3 losses this week. At least the Knicks found a way to beat Philly, even if they did almost blow a 20 point lead to one of the worst teams of all time. They also lost to a team who was missing 4 starters and the 1 starter who did play had the flue and a broken wrist and still managed to drop 37 points on the Knicks. Rage. Remember my comment last week about not being able to win without Melo? Well we may find out if that’s true or not this coming week.

2 Stoudemire, Amar’e Amare was the only player on this roster other than Melo who was able to string together more than one good game in a row this week. I’m not going to bother bringing up the defense anymore. He’s been scoring and rebounding which is what he needs to do. 8
3 Wear, Travis Wear was the Knicks best bench player this week. In related news the Knicks are 4-11. 6
4 Acy, Quincy Quincy isn’t expected to do much other than rebound, and in that regard he doesn’t disappoint. He’s been playing exactly to expectations. 4
5 Prigioni, Pablo It was just a week ago that I was talking about Priggys slump. Looks like he snapped out of it and might push Larkin out of the rotation if he keeps it up. Continue reading →

TRIANGLE!

The Knicks headed into last night’s game against the Jazz with a 2-7 record, came out of the game with a 2-8 record. While it looked as though we would have chance to win the game with Melo’s tying bank in three 3 with 3 seconds left, it was just not to be as Trey Burke sealed the deal for the Jazz on a 19 foot baseline jumper over J.R. Smith. Now of course this record is not what we as fans envisioned but there is nothing we can do about it. We started off with a blowout loss to Chicago yet were somehow able to bounce back and beat the Cavs in LeBron’s homecoming. After that, after our hopes for the season skyrocketed, some of us had this feeling that maybe this season might turn out better than we thought, that maybe we will finish with a somewhat high seed in the eastern conference. At least that’s what I though, yet I was dead wrong as the Knicks went 1-6 over our next 7 games dashing all hopes. The playoffs look ever bleaker due to the fact that we suffered back to losses to Hawks, and also had losses to Pistons, Nets, and Magic. (All of those teams besides the Pistons could be competing for a playoff spot.)

Now the triangle so far has looked as expected, there are times when the Knicks have faded back into isolation basketball yet there are times when the triangle allows for open uncontested jumpers and layups. One problem that has still plagued the Knicks is the lack of the ability to make smart basketball decisions. Such as J.R. Smith and that final shot he took against the Magic, or the fact that with 4 minutes left in the third quarter J.R. had to take a seat on the bench because he had 4 fouls last night. On a night where Amar’e is out, and where Shumpert gets injured 58 seconds into the game, J.R. has to realize that he becomes the second scoring option; he cannot be taking bad fouls. The amount of 24 second shot clock violations also appear to be very high, I do not have an exact stat but its bad when the game is on the line and you appear to commit a 24 second violation. Now we were saved by replay, but the Knicks have to understand the situation better.

After the Bulls game I thought I’d be posting a very angry bitter power rankings with week, but after nice wins against the Cavs and Hornets I’m pretty excited about this team.

1 Anthony, Carmelo He didn’t play well against the Bulls but no one did. Melo got hit 20,000th point against the Hornets which is a nice milestone to hit. I also love how Fisher is keeping Melo to around 35 minutes, even in close games. Should mean Melo has gas left in the tank to close out games. 1
2 Shumpert, Iman Not sure when it happened, but Shumert learned how to shoot. This is huge for the Knicks as our trifecta of SG’s were all very one dimensional. Adding a 2nd dimension to his defense is very encouraging. 4
3 Larkin, Shane Shane gets the 3rd spot for getting thrown into the starting PG position and holding his own. This could have gone much worse, but Shane kept his composure and put up some decent numbers. 9
4 Smith, J.R. JR has behaved all week! I didn’t see too many turn around fadeaway three point shots. He’s passing as well. I have no faith it’ll last but I’ll enjoy it while it lasts. 3

Bulls @ Knicks 10/29/14 – Game Recap

The Knicks have a rough start to the season, beginning with the team that tried to steal Carmelo Anthony from the Knicks.

Knicks started off the game well enough, opening up with an 8-2 run, causing four turnovers in first six possessions. It was capped off by an Anthony steal leading to an Amare Stoudemire slam dunk. Bulls finished the first quarter strong though, going on an 8-0, taking a 24-20 lead. The Knick’s bench could not keep up with the Bulls’ bench, Taj Gibson and Aaron Brooks had their way. All the Knicks’ starters had positive +/- in the first quarter, unfortunately every bench player was negative…

The dominance of the Bull’s bench continued into the second quarter, scoring 22 of the 29 points in the quarter. Gibson in particular dominated, scoring ten points in the period, completely dominating Quincy Acy. Gibson finished the game with 22 points and 8 rebounds. The Bulls held a ten point led at halftime 53-43, with Pau Gasol grabbing an offensive rebound, and sinking an 11 foot jump shot to beat the buzzer.

The third quarter was a laugher, with the Bulls extending their lead to as much as 24 in the period. The Bulls just had their way offensively, shooting 68.8% from the field, and suffocated defensively, holding New York to 27.3% shooting.

Of course the Knicks played no defense, which everyone knew would be a sore spot for New York this season. This could not have been more evident than when the Bull’s gained a 20 point lead with 4:07 remaining in the third with back to back wide open dunks under the rim by Gasol, and Gibson. Gasol finished his first game with the Bulls with a double double, 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Restricted Access

The New York Knicks continue to explore their options when looking to upgrade the current roster. The laughable trade proposal for Kevin love had no shot of being accepted but it at least shows us that Phil Jackson is still looking to make improvements. There is certainly room for improvement as we inch closer to the start of the season. In particular there are two restricted free agents that would make a whole lot of sense on the Knicks roster. The first of these free agents is the disgruntled power forward/center Greg Monroe. Monroe averaged 15.2 points, 9.3 rebounds, shot 65% from the free throw line, shot just under 50%, and averaged around 1 steal and .6 blocks a game. Monroe has expressed his interest in leaving a crowed Detroit frontline that includes young and talented center Andre Drummond and the highly paid and overrated Josh Smith who apparently has the full support of Stan van Gundy. The other restricted free agent is point guard Eric Bledsoe of the Phoenix Suns. Bledsoe really came into his own last year as he made the jump from role player to starter. Despite only playing in 43 games due to an injury Bledsoe looked like a polished starter as he averaged 17.7 points, 5.5 assists, 4.7 rebounds, 1.6 steals, and shot a respectable 35.7% from three. Bledsoe is certainly a better option than any of our current point guards. He doesn’t have the three point shooting or knowledge that Jose Calderon possess but he has defense agility needed to stay with John Wall, Kyrie Irving, Derrick Rose, and the other point guards of the East. The Knicks will have to give up quite the package to acquire Bledsoe seeing that the Suns have said they will match any offer. Monroe on the other hand should be easier to obtain. Let’s take a look at what it cost the Knicks and how Monroe and Bledsoe would fit into New York’s system. Continue reading →

The Next Knicks

            Now is the time to stand up and applaud Phil Jackson (if you haven’t already), for the heist he pulled off yesterday in the trade with the Dallas Mavericks. Phil Jackson shipped out the 14 million dollar contract of Tyson Chandler and the multiyear deal Raymond Felton still had remaining. The Knicks received from the Mavericks point guard Jose Calderon, backup shooting guard Wayne Ellington, starting center Samuel Dalambert, promising young point guard Shane Larkin, and two second draft picks in tonight’s draft. With the Knicks actually making smart moves and getting back draft picks, its time start being proud of the fact that for one day we are not the laughing stock of the NBA when it comes to trades. (Player contracts are another story, but at least we are improving in one area). The Knicks come out of this deal looking to go younger and looking to get rid of big contracts. Expect that trend to continue as the offseason progresses. Could we possibly see a J.R. Smith trade tonight instead of a Shumpert trade? Could we possibly see Jose Calderon be traded one day after we acquired him? A lot of new possibilities have emerged with this trade. I would expect the Knicks draft strategy to deviate after yesterday’s deal, so with that said let us take a look at who the Knicks might target in the second round and look at the chance that the Knicks still trade into the first round.

 Point Guards:

Before the trade I had the Knicks trading up to the 21st spot with the OKC Thunder to draft Syracuse point guard Tyler Ennis. Trading Shumpert for Ennis would be a good move in my book and would welcome the addition of pass first point guard that has great court vision and plays defense. Yet with the addition of Shane Larkin and Jose Calderon the Knicks might draft a point guard with their later pick. The Knicks might target Louisville guard Russ Smith. Smith is a talented 3-point shooter, decent defender, and a good value for a late second round pick. I would hope the Knicks could find a way to trade Jose Calderon but if they don’t having Larkin and Calderon going forward would be an upgrade over Toure Murray and Raymond Felton.
