Previewing the Knicks Training Camp

We’d like to welcome Jesse Schneiderman to the site, he’ll be adding pieces throughout the season.  You can see more of his work at The Cult Jar and you can follow him on twitter at @thecultjar and @JesseOneT

Training camp is upon us. They begin in October and I, like most basketball fans, are quite excited. Unfortunately, the Knicks made news this off-season for all the wrong reasons (bad personnel moves, guaranteed championships, and speaking with Isiah Thomas). Regardless, 2012-2013 is a new season and with that, fans have renewed hope. We’re not alone, though. Many roster hopefuls come to training camp hoping to make “the league” and secure a spot playing (or watching from the bench) in the World’s Most Famous Arena. Here’s a few unknown commodities, with their odds of joining the Knicks this year.

Mychel Thompson – F (6’6, 211 lbs.)
The son of former NBA star Mychal Thompson, “E” (as I’ve named him, after the only difference between his name and his father’s) is a pretty straightforward player. He can shoot the three (though he was terribly inefficient with the Cavs in five games last year) and is a pretty good athlete. If he gets hot during training camp, he has a shot. Otherwise, he’s a worse Bill Walker.
Chances of making the team: 2/5

Henry Sims – C (6’10, 251 lbs.)
Sims averaged about 12 points and 6 rebounds at Georgetown last season and is the prototypical “center with a wingspan and not much else.” He’ll always get a chance because of his size, but he’s not a good basketball player. With the signing of Marcus Camby and the news that the Knicks are looking for another established big man to bring to training camp, the future is bleak for Sims.
Chances of making the team: .01/5

John Shurna – F (6’9, 220 lbs.)
Shurna is, by all accounts, a goof. He became a legend at Northwestern for his doofy smile and excellent, albeit ugly, jump shot. (Similar to Sims, he has little chance.) He’s more athletic than he looks but a mess defensively. Do I hope he makes it? Yes. Will he? No.
Chances of making the team: 1/5

Chris Copeland – F (6’8, 225 lbs.)
Copeland, who had been playing in Belgium last year and throughout Europe since college, was the Knicks’ best player in the Summer League. He can score and has an NBA body (he’s bigger than the other forwards they’re looking at). Copeland is as close to a lock as this list has.
Chances of making the team: 4.5/5

Aside from those listed, expect Pablo Prigioni to become the oldest rookie in NBA history, the Knicks to only have one member of the Smith family on the roster come opening day (Chris is shorter and worse than big bro J.R.), and James White to turn some heads with athleticism before missing the cut.

Knicks Podcast 2012/13 Fantasy League

OK folks, the fantasy league is set up.  We had enough people say they were OK with a $20 wager which will go to the top 1 or 2 spots depending on how many people join.  Draft day is October 18th at 9pm EST.  Send your $20 to my paypal – chkenparm@hotmail.com to unlock your team.  Please do that BEFORE the draft begins.

The league is here:  http://basketball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/league/nyknickspodcast

Once again it’s time for the New York Knicks to dive into the “Not Fixed” NBA Draft, but in order to go forward into the draft. Let’s take a look back and see what the Knicks have selected from past NBA drafts.

2011-Iman Shumpert-Georgia Tech 1st rd pick 17
Strengths: good penetrator, great defender
Weaknesses: shot selection, consistent jump shot

Iman is the man as far as I am concerned, he brings an edge to the Knicks team of grit and hustle, he throws his body on the line constantly, now if he can only stop injuring himself, he will have an even more productive year.

2010-Landry Fields-Stanford 2nd rd pick 39
Strengths: ok defender, good off the bench.
Weaknesses: lapses on defense.

Think he lost a lot of confidence when Carmelo came to the Knicks, but he amazingly seems to play better with Jeremy Lin. Continue reading

Some thoughts on Game 5

  • I’m not sure if Jeremy Lin was able to play or not, but 85% sounds like he could have.  Chandler played with the flu, Amar’e played with half his hand stapled together, Jeffries couldn’t even walk, Bibby died 3 years ago and you couldn’t play 10 minutes?  It’s not like it would kill his market value, he can’t make more than 5M next year so one bad game wouldn’t have done anything.
  • I hate that we had so many injuries but loved how much heart most (not you Lin) of the players showed even though we were terribly outmatched.
  • Mike Woodson couldn’t try zone even once?  Did we make any adjustments this series other than to cut Novaks minutes?
  • Novak needs to learn to shoot off the screen.
  • Fields….you look so good sometimes and then you lose the ball on a drive in the 4th to kill what small momentum we had.  Throwing the ball in LeBrons face was fun to watch.
  • Just Ridiculous Smith – I know he is a streaky shooter, but I didn’t know the streak went from mediocre to abysmal.
  • Miami fans are the worst.  We saw the shirts on the empty chairs.  Also, learn ONE other chant other than LETS GO HEAT.  I swear the only other chant I heard was MVP for LeBron, which they strangly chanted after a ball got thrown in his face.
  • Has there every been a play where Battier on defense or Wade on offense didn’t end up on the floor?  And have either of them ever not been shocked when a foul either wasn’t called on the other team or was called on them?
  • Does Spoestra tell everyone on the team of flop constantly or did they come up with that idea during a players meeting?
  • Can we officially say Amar’e has the worst contract in the NBA or does that one good playoff game negate a season of garbage?
  • I really really miss the old team.  I refuse to believe that if we never did the Melo trade, and signed Chandler we wouldn’t have finished as a 3rd seed this season.
  • Lets go Pacers!

The Knicks show the Cavs how much they want to play the Heat in the playoffs

Welcome back Amar’e!  Glad to see you watched no tape on how to play defense while you were out.

I felt even more miserable than they look while watching this game.

With this loss the Knicks will now be playing the Heat or the Bulls in the first round instead of having a chance at playing the Pacers.  Here’s some notes on the game:

  • When Mike Bibby was your best player, and it’s not 2004-2006, you’re going to lose.
  • Amar’e is (still) a complete liability on defense
  • This is why an offense based on jacking up 3’s isn’t always a good idea
  • Why look for Melo, he’s only been averaging 30 points a game for a month, instead….
  • whoever gets the ball first just jack up a shot.  No one needs to try to get the rebound either, that would use up energy that can be spent on contested 20-30 foot shots.
  • I thought the Cavs were the team that was supposed to be tanking.

Notes from Last Night’s Match-up of the Bulls vs. Developmental League Knicks

Was this guy really supposed to be our savior at point guard???

  • Do you remember how everyone was worried that when Baron came back he would insist on taking over the starting role from Jeremy Lin. Well Lin is out for the year and Baron still insists on playing back up point guard even if we don’t have a goddam starting point guard.
  • How do the Knicks choose which quarter not to play each night? Did they pick the 2nd quarter out of a hat before the game?
  • Why can’t this team be good at both offense and defense. Last year they rocked on offense but couldn’t play a lick of defense. Now since Woodson took over they have the best defense in the league and a pathetic offense. Do the Knicks need to bring D’Antoni back as Woodson’s offensive coordinator? Continue reading

Lamar Odom takes rest of the season off to wash his vagina

Lamar Odom will not be playing any more games this season.

Lamar Odom is a Sad Panda

For those of you who haven’t been following this tragic story let me fill you in.  Lamar Odom was completely confused and very butthurt that the Lakers would actually have the nerve  to try and get the best point guard in the league.  He then demanded a trade and was lucky enough to go to the defending champions, the Dallas Mavericks.  He then pouted his way to the worst season of his career, took some time off to pout and cook his wife some large meals and came back even worse.  Dallas decided it’s not even worth playing him at all anymore so for now on the box score will read Lamar Odom – DNP-SAD.

The ABC’s of the Cavaliers game – 3/31/12

C is for Cavaliers: Who with Irving and Varejao out were nice enough to put a bunch of D-leaguers and players no one has ever heard of on the court.

L is for Lin:  Unfortunately we found out before the game that we’ll have to go the rest of the season without him.

The ABC’s of today’s game

D is for Detroit who has a terrible team.  A team so terrible the Knicks were able to play mediocre on both end of the floor and still win by 20.

E is for enthusiastic, which is how I feel about Harrellson’s play as well as the handlebar mustache he is growing in.

T is for Tyson Chandler who was a beast all game.
